How to get to Railay

How do you reach the stunning shores of Railay Beach? Getting there's an adventure in itself! Most visitors reach Railay via Ao Nang

I found the most exhilarating way is by boat. Depending on where you're coming from, you have a few travel options. If you’re in Ao Nang, long-tail boats whisk you away, with frequent departures throughout the day. Just check the boat schedules to avoid missing your ride!

Alternatively, you can hop on a ferry from Krabi town, which also offers routes to Railay. The beauty of the journey is undeniable as you glide over the turquoise waters, surrounded by limestone cliffs.

Hop on a ferry from Krabi town and glide over turquoise waters, embraced by stunning limestone cliffs on your way to Railay.

Its 200 baht return per person however if your like me and only wanted to go for the morning you may have to pay a premium to come back.

We left at 8.30am and needed to be back by 11.30 to check out of our accommodation. Fortunately despite being the only 2 ppl needing to come back and having a return ticket we needed to go to the south end of the beach where the return ticket boats were located.

If we had only purchased a 1 way ticket we could have got on the other boats that seemed to be more freelance for a cost of 200 Baht each as long as there were at least  5/6 ppl. Its a standard 800 baht per boat if you need a private hire one way.
As people were checking out to leave and those people being on one way tickets, if you wish to go early and come back early getting a one way ticket would be more optimal so then you can grab one of the freelance boats taking people back who are checking out of their hotels.

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Railay Beach?

I’ve found the best months to visit Railay Beach are between November and March.

The weather conditions during this time are absolutely perfect—warm and dry, with plenty of sunshine. You can soak up the sun on the stunning beaches or explore the limestone cliffs without worrying about rain ruining your plans.

If you want to experience the freedom of adventure in ideal weather, this is definitely the time to go! Remember though it is HIGH SEASON so book and plan ahead.

Are There Any Entry Fees for Railay Beach?

There aren’t any entry fees to access Railay Beach, which is a relief for budget travelers like me!

Can I Find Vegetarian or Vegan Food Options in Railay?

I’ve found a variety of vegetarian restaurants and vegan snacks while exploring the area.

Did you know that about 30% of the eateries cater to plant-based diets? It’s amazing!

From hearty curries to fresh salads, there’s something for everyone.

I loved grabbing a quick vegan snack at a local stand—it was both delicious and invigorating.

You’ll definitely enjoy the freedom of choice when it comes to tasty vegetarian options!

What To Do In Railay

rock climbing at Phra nang beach

Rock Climbing

There are plenty of places around the small township that offer Rock climbing. It doesn't matter what level you are as they all cater for beginners also as well as experienced climbers

Snorkeling

When its summer season the waters are clear and warmer and snorkeling is a favourite pastime. Wet season often brings fine weather but interrupting rainfall from fast approaching storms can make thee water dirty not to mention dangerous and the water can change very quickly.

Kayaking

I was there in late August 2025 and even then during wet season there were people hiring kayaks. As long as its not too roughly its a great way to pass the time away.

Sunset and Sunrise

Clearly the most enjoyable thing to watch is the sunrises and sunsets. Both are equally as beautiful although wet season can be often cloudy so its not as nice. With the sun rising in the east and setting in the west its not hard to see both with it being just a 5 min walk from one side to the other. New bars and hotels are going uop all the time and there are several places to sit relax and watch a nice sunset with a cold drink.

Where to go on Railay

One of the most popular beaches on Railay is Phra Nang beach. Its on the southern end of Railay and can be reached by going to the east side and then turning right through the cliffs walkway underneath along the pathway.

east railay

This is railay East side where the path runs along the beach

Its about a 15 min walk from East side and the pathway is mostly concreted now. Once you get to the beach there is a shrine on the left side of the beach with the caves to the northern end which has two sections to it.
The first section is the main beach with the famous karst mountain that railay is famous for and then there is the 2nd section that leads to the caves above the beach.

Once your at Phra nang beach you can walk right to the opposite end to the caves. Its a pretty steep climb and slippery in the wet season or after rain but its a good view from the top

What Are the Safety Tips for Swimming at Railay Beach?

When I swim, I always prioritize safety. First, I check for swimming precautions like currents or tides.

I’ve learned to wear safety gear, such as a life jacket if I’m unsure of my abilities. It's essential to swim with a buddy; it feels more freeing and safe.

I also stay close to the shore, where I can easily reach the land. Enjoying the water is amazing, but safety comes first! Watch out for RIPS especially on the cave side

Railay vs Ao Nang

While both Railay and Ao Nang boast stunning beaches and vibrant atmospheres, they each offer unique experiences that cater to different preferences.

Personally, I find Railay's charm enchanting, especially with its limestone cliffs and laid-back vibe.

Here are a few key differences:

  1. Railay Activities: If you're into rock climbing or kayaking, Railay's your playground, offering thrilling adventures right at your doorstep.
  2. Ao Nang Comparisons: Ao Nang, on the other hand, serves as a bustling hub with a wider range of shops and nightlife, perfect for those seeking excitement.
  3. Accessibility: Railay's somewhat isolated, only reachable by boat, while Ao Nang is easily accessible from Krabi, making it a convenient choice for many travelers.
